Her story

From Blue to Black —
the metamorphosis

Nazila Masoumzadeh is an Iranian-Canadian social activist whose life's work is rooted in a simple, unwavering belief: no one should be left behind. Having witnessed firsthand the displacement, isolation, and legal vulnerability that so many newcomers and homeless individuals face in Canada, she made it her mission to bridge that gap.

Fluent in English, Farsi, and Turkish, Nazila reaches across linguistic and cultural divides — speaking directly to refugee and newcomer communities in their own language, in their own voice.

What began as the Blue Butterfly grew into something deeper and more resilient: Black Butterfly. The transformation is intentional. Where blue spoke of hope, black speaks of strength forged through darkness — the butterfly that emerges from the hardest conditions is the most extraordinary.

"From thousands and thousands of people, I learned lessons that shaped who I am today. Every encounter, every conversation left a mark on my heart and my soul."

The name

Why Black Butterfly?

The butterfly is the universal symbol of transformation — from darkness, pressure, and waiting, into something that soars freely and brilliantly. That is the journey Nazila witnesses in every person she helps.

The shift from Blue to Black carries meaning. Blue was the beginning — hope, calmness, possibility. Black is what comes after: resilience, depth, the strength that only adversity can build.

Mission

Three pillars. One mission.

01

Refugee support

Welcoming people who have fled crisis and conflict. Providing orientation, translation, and connection to settlement services so they can begin building safe, stable lives in Canada.

02

Homeless outreach

Meeting people where they are — on the street, in shelters, in crisis — and connecting them to housing resources, emergency relief, and the dignity every human being deserves.

03

Legal access

Cutting through barriers of language, cost, and complexity — connecting vulnerable individuals to legal clinics, immigration lawyers, and advocacy organizations so their rights can actually be exercised.
